In this day and age of dating apps there are so many pitfalls associated with relationships. People you think are looking for one thing turn out to be someone else. Unfortunately, too many of these relationships end in a struggle. Here are the three most common family law struggles for those who were looking for love in all the wrong places!
1. Domestic violence claims: Domestic violence isn’t isolated to physical abuse. Stalking, harassment, phone calls, etc can all cause one to be faced with allegations of domestic violence. Whenever domestic violence is claimed it usually involves both the civil side and the criminal side of things. This means extra care must be given in a situation. Don’t keep calling. Don’t drive by their house and don’t grab their phone during an argument. All of these things can lead you to some significant domestic violence issues.
2. Child support: Yes it only takes 1 time…basic biology. Whether it’s a long term relationship or a one time hook up the possibility of pregnancy exists. When this happens then you are looking at least 18 years of child support and custody issues. If you want to avoid a long term commitment or a long term child support obligation be sure you are committed to raising a child.
3. Property issues: Unlike divorces, division of property when you are not married is a challenge. The law doesn’t really recognize any presumptions of ownership when you are not married. Thus, title on property becomes incredibly important. We see many people who think they are entitled to half of the house or half of the car. Even if you contribute some money this doesn’t automatically mean you have an ownership interest. Be aware of property issues when you decide to live with someone. Be clear and protect your rights!
